Bariatric surgery is a way to help an obese person to lose weight; however, the procedure isn't a cure-all for obesity. A dedication to living a healthy lifestyle is necessary to lose weight, with or without the surgery. Many bariatric surgeons require their patients to lose weight prior to the surgery. This is done to ensure that the patient has the discipline to follow the strict diet and exercise regime after the surgery that is needed to ensure weight loss.
Step 1
Meet with a registered dietician that works with bariatric surgery patients. You should schedule this appointment as soon as you decide that bariatric surgery is appropriate for you. Your surgeon may recommend a dietician. Your exact caloric intake needs are determined by various factors, such as your current weight, the amount you need to lose before surgery, your activity level, your overall health and your current eating habits. Follow the dietary plan that is made for you.
Step 2
Eat on smaller plates. A smaller plate takes less food to make it look full. The University of California, San Diego Medical Center states that you should get into the habit of eating smaller portions before your surgery. This will help you learn about portion control, which will speed up your weight loss.
Step 3
Start an approved exercise program. You may be referred to a physical therapist to help you find exercises that are appropriate for you. Walking, swimming and light strength training exercises are usually recommended before bariatric surgery. Getting active will help you to shed pounds faster than if you were to lead a stationary life.
Step 4
Stop drinking caffeinated, carbonated and sugary beverages. Soda and many other drinks contain empty calories, which will slow your weight loss. Ideally, you will drink primarily water. Some doctors allow bariatric patients to drink decaffeinated tea or sugar free flavored drink mixes.
Step 5
Follow your pre-surgery diet plan. Approximately two weeks before your procedure, your doctor will place you on a strict diet that is usually based on a liquid diet. This diet plan helps to get your body ready for the surgery by reducing the size of your liver and minimizing the likelihood of bleeding troubles. Your pre-surgery plan is customized to fit your needs.
