Though diet pills claim to be safe and effective and to many an easy shortcut to shedding unwanted pounds, the long list of potential side effects and health hazards can make these pills tough to swallow. Without subjecting yourself to possible unnecessary complications due to the latest diet pill to hit the market, you can safely and effective lose weight by simply getting back to basics. Eating right and exercise may not strip the pounds off as fast as diet pills promise to do, but the peace of mind that comes with knowing you took all the right healthy steps to reach your goal is priceless.

Step 1

Change your eating habits cutting out unnecessary sugars and fats. While fats and sugars don't have to be taken out of your diet completely they should be enjoyed in moderation. Eat five small meals a day rather than three medium to large sized meals to keep yourself from getting hungry and help to avoid binging.

Step 2

Incorporate more physical activity into your daily life to help burn off calories. Make sure you exercise for at least 30 minutes three times a week. Look for opportunities to walk rather than taking elevators and escalators. Your 30 minutes should be some form of cardio. Even just taking walks can help to get the pounds off.

Step 3

Keep a journal of all the things you eat during the day so that you can keep track of what you're eating during the day. Being able to look over the journal at the end of the day can help you to put everything into perspective and keep a total of your caloric intake.

Step 4

Drink water steadily throughout the day. Often times we mistake hunger for thirst. Also drinking water before a meal can help you to feel fuller sooner and help to keep you from over eating.

Step 5

Slow down and enjoy your meals. Take small bites and chew slowly. Sometimes it takes awhile for the feeling of being full to reach the brain so it's too easy to keep eating. When eating out get a takeout box right away for large portions and place half of the meal in the box and out of sight. This will help to reduce the temptation to overeat.

Tips and Warnings

  • Talk to your doctor before making drastic dietary changes and incorporating exercise, especially if you weren't physically active before. Your doctor can help you to determine the healthiest course of action for you.
