Alphagan P is a opthalmic medicine that consists of a solution of brimonidine. It is most commonly used to treat wide-angle glaucoma or high pressure in the eyes. Brimonidine works to stimulate a type of receptor called the alpha-3 adrenergic receptor, which is part of the autonomic (involuntary nervous system). When brimonidine is applied to the eye, it relaxes the muscles that control fluid drainage, allowing fluid to drain out of the eye, which causes the eye's pressure to be lowered.
Common Side Effects
The most common side effects, seen in 10 to 20 percent of all patients taking Alphagan P, include eye pruritis (itching of the eye), allergic conjunctivitis (inflammation of the whites of the eyes, also known as "pink eye") and conjunctival hyperemia (abnormal discharge from the eyes). Other common side effects (seen in 5 to 9 percent of patients) include burning of the eyes, dry eyes, ocular folliculitis (inflammation of the eye lashes, leading to pain and swelling), elevated blood pressure and abnormal vision. These side effects, while uncomfortable, should go away over time and do not warrant stopping your medication unless they are unbearable.
Rare Side Effects
Some side effects are less common, occurring in less than 5 percent of all patients. They include irritation of the eyelids (causing a burning sensation or the feeling that something is in the eye), swelling of the eyes and a bloody discharge from the whites of the eyes. Other patients experience a cough, dizziness, fatigue and flu-like symptoms. Alphagan P can also cause elevated blood cholesterol, insomnia, rhinitis (symptoms of the common cold), light sensitivity, a rash and a sinus infection. Alphagan P can also cause you to have problems in seeing out of parts of your field of vision, problems focusing on objects and "floaters" in your vision. Because some of these eye problems can be serious, you should see your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms.
Other Possible Side Effects
Some side effects listed by RxList.com are reported by clinicians and represent populations of unknown size. They are listed as possible side effects, however, because they can potentially be serious or because they were frequently reported. These side effects include a slowed heartbeat and depression, inflammation of the irises and nausea. In infants, Alphagan P can cause hypothermia, low blood pressure, slow breathing and heart rate, and decreased muscle tone.
