Zebeta is a trade name for the compound bisoprolol. Zebeta is a medication that can be used to treat high blood pressure and some cases of heart failure. It is a beta-blocker, which means it blocks the effects of certain chemicals that cause the heart to beat faster and with greater force. By slowing the heart rate and its output, Zebeta can be used (by itself or with other medications) to lower blood pressure. A dosage of 5 mg is a relatively low dose of the medication.
Common Side Effects
Although almost every kind of medicine has the potential to cause certain side effects, many of the ones caused by Zebeta are mild and will go away over time. The most common adverse effects associated with Zebeta use are diarrhea and fatigue. Some patients also experience drowsiness, dizziness, mild headache and nausea. Other patients experience mild muscle weakness and problems with sleeping. These are not considered to be serious side effects and warrant a doctor's attention only if they are unbearable or if they persist for many weeks.
Allergic Effects
Because Zebeta is a compound not normally found in the human body, in some cases it can cause the body to have an allergic reaction. Side effects from an allergy to Zebeta include a rash or hives, as well as blistering of the skin and swelling of the face, lips and tongue. Some patients experience difficulty in breathing or swallowing, chest tightness and hoarseness. Others experience abnormally low blood pressure and may feel dizzy when standing up from a seated or reclining position. These are serious side effects. If you experience any of these adverse effects, you should stop taking Zebeta immediately and contact your doctor.
Drug Interactions and Other Side Effects
Zebeta can also cause an elevation in serum triglyceride levels. You should also be careful when taking Zebeta along with other blood pressure and heart medications, as the combination can heighten the effects of both medications, leading to abnormally low blood pressure and a low heart rate. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking rifampin, as this medication can interact with Zebeta. Also be aware that consuming alcohol or sedatives can intensify the drowsiness that Zebeta can cause, so avoid using heavy machinery or other activities that require you to be alert.
