The kidneys are two small organs in your body that filter impurities and toxins out of the blood. Individuals who have impaired kidney function may or may not show significant symptoms of the reduced functioning. Chronic diseases, trauma and poison however can lead to kidney disease, characterized by fatigue, changes in urination habits, itchiness and muscle cramps. These are all signs that the substances the kidneys would normally filter have accumulated in your body instead. Fortunately, kidney disease tends to occur gradually and certain dietary supplements may be helpful in improving kidney function.
Step 1
Take a grape seed extract supplement that contains 20 to 125 mg one to three times a day. According to the University of Maryland, grape seed extract is rich in antioxidants, which destroy substances in the body known as free radicals. These substances can, in large amounts, kill healthy cells and affect the genetic structure of other cells. Taking grape seed extract can help support the filtration function of your kidneys, reducing the strain that can lead to impaired function.
Step 2
Try an L-carnitine supplement at a dosage recommended by your physician. The University of Maryland explains that carnitine helps your body convert fat into fuel and your kidneys are a source of it's production. If you have impaired kidney functioning, you may end up with a deficiency in carnitine. This can cause symptoms such as fatigue and urinary tract problems. If you already have compromised kidney function however, you should only use this supplement with the supervision of your physician. In some cases, carnitine may need to be administered intravenously in order to reverse a severe deficiency.
Step 3
Use a zinc supplement, which may help deficiencies caused by compromised kidney functioning. Zinc is a mineral that is essential for immunity, protein synthesis and cell reproduction according to the National Institutes of Health. Normally, your body is able to absorb zinc that is naturally occurring in the foods you eat. When you have decreased kidney function however, you may not absorb as much zinc as your body needs, creating a deficiency. Supplementing zinc can help maintain beneficial levels of this mineral in your body.
Step 4
Take supplemental Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which is an essential fatty acid found in cold water fish. The University of Maryland explains that essential fatty acids like EPA have been found to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. Heart disease can lead to damage to the kidneys, resulting in water retention and heart failure. Taking supplemental essential fatty acids can provide protective benefits, even if you don't like to eat fish. Decreasing your risk of heart disease can reduce the strain on the renal system, improving kidney function.
