Sears produces a line of exercise equipment under the "Lifestyler" brand name, including a series of exercise bicycles. These devices consist of a seat and two pivoting handlebars attached to a base unit. Pedals mounted on the side of the base unit connect to an interior flywheel, which provides resistance during the workout.
Handlebars
The handlebars on the Lifestyler exercise bicycle are designed to operate in two modes: stationary and dual-action. When in stationary mode, the handlebars remain locked in a vertical position, providing support for the upper body when pedaling. Dual-action mode allows the user to push and pull the handlebars in alternating order, providing an upper-body exercise during the workout. To convert the handlebars from one mode to another, engage or disengage the attached link arms to the pedals, as appropriate.
Monitor
Lifestyler exercise bicycles come equipped with a digital monitor mounted between the two handlebars, just above the base unit. This monitor is capable of displaying four pieces of information: your current speed, the duration of your workout, the estimated total distance you have pedaled and the estimated calories you have burned. To switch among these displays, press the button labeled "mode" located near the bottom edge of the device.
Variable Resistance
Some models of Lifestyler exercise bicycles feature a resistance knob installed on top of the base. When turned to the right, the knob adds resistance to the pedals, increasing the difficulty of the workout; when turned to the left, the the knob reduces resistance. Avoid using too much resistance when first starting your exercise regimen. Start low and add more resistance as your strength and endurance improve.
Adjustable Seat
To ensure a comfortable and effective workout, set the bicycle's seat to the proper height. Lifestyler exercise bicycles have a pin installed on the side of the seat post, underneath the seat. To adjust the seat's height, remove the pin, slide the seat up or down as necessary and then reinstall the pin. When the seat is at the proper height, your knee should remain slightly bent when your foot is in the lowest pedal.
Leveling Feet
An exercise bicycle that wobbles when you pedal can prove distracting. At the bottom of the Lifestyler's base are a pair of leveling feet. Turn one or both of the feet as necessary, until you have properly leveled the device. After adjusting the feet, begin pedaling on the bicycle to confirm that the machine will remain stationary when in use.
