Pilates is a non-impact exercise program composed of postures and routines to build strength, flexibility and balance. Pilates mats are designed for specific core-strengthening floor exercises and are distinctly different from yoga or other exercise mats. While many studios will provide mats for students, it is helpful to have your own if you intend to maintain a home practice. Above all, proper support and durability are the most essential features to consider when selecting a personal Pilates exercise mat.

Thickness

Pilates mats are available in a variety of styles and colors, but are distinctive in their thickness as opposed to yoga exercise mats. While yoga mats usually measure somewhere between 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch thick, Pilates exercise mats should measure at least ½-inch thick in order to provide adequate support. For your own safety and comfort, resist the urge to save money by using a yoga mat for your Pilates practice.

Size

Personal Pilates mats can vary between 72 and 86 inches in length and about 21 to 39 inches in width. According to the Pliates Mat Buyer's Guide, a standard mat measures 25 inches by 76 inches. If you require an extra-long or other size of mat, shop around online; many retailers carry mats that vary from these dimensions. Studio mats may also be significantly larger than the portable, personal variety, sometimes measuring 8-feet-long and 4-feet-wide.

Structure

Pilates mats are usually made out of foam or rubber and should be relatively firm in order to provide proper cushioning. Unlike yoga mats, which require a strong gripping surface for standing poses, Pilates mats are designed primarily for seated exercises and usually have a smoother surface. However, a high-quality mat should still provide enough grip to keep you from slipping or sliding if you perspire during your Pilates workout. If you can, test your mat before making a purchase by pinching the width to check its resistance to pressure and then dampening your hands slightly to mimic perspiration and compare wet and dry traction.

Considerations

If you will be carrying your mat to and from a Pilates studio, you may want to consider a roll-up model with built-in straps for easy transport and storage. Some models also come with adhesive straps for quick and simple portability, although if you already own a yoga mat sling, this will work just as well for standard-sized mats. Roll-up mats usually cost between $30 and $50 and can be found at sporting goods stores and some big-box retailers and online.
