Do Automatic Calculation
Step 1
Determine if the elliptical dashboard automatically calculates distance. Check whether there is a button for "distance" or "miles."

Press "Mode" or "Display" if you do not see any numbers.

Look at the number displayed on the distance dashboard. The elliptical will automatically calculate your distance, and you can start pedaling. You have walked 1 mile when the distance displays the number "1."
Perform Manual Calculation
Step 1
Calculate the circumference of the elliptical wheel. This ascertains the distance traveled with each rotation.
Step 2
Measure the distance between the center of the wheel to the edge of the wheel. Use a tape measure. This measurement is the radius of the wheel. Multiply the value of the radius by 2 and multiply the answer by pi -- 3.14. The final answer is the circumference of the wheel measured in inches.
Step 3
Divide the circumference in inches by 12. This lets you figure out the circumference in feet. This number is how far the wheel travels with each rotation.
Step 4
Divide the number 5,280 by the circumference in feet. This first number is the amount of feet in a mile. The result of the equation is the number of revolutions the wheel must turn to travel 1 mile. Manually count the wheel turns to determine when you have walked 1 mile.
