Getting a basketball into the hoop is not as easy as it looks. The diameter of a basketball is not much smaller than the hoop it wants to go into. Once someone has learned the basics of shooting a basketball they may find that they have just begun. Then they get to learn the jump shot, the layup, the hook and the jump hook. The No. 1 easiest way to learn how to shoot a basketball is through practice. There is no such thing as too much practice.

Step 1

Bend your knees slightly. Through practice you will learn how bent they should be depending on how far the shot has to travel and how much arc you want to achieve.

Step 2

Place the ball in your dominant hand. Spread your fingers out across the ball to a comfortable position. The palm should be slightly raised from the basketball so only the fingertips are actually touching the ball.

Step 3

Locate the basketball hoop and keep your eyes locked on it.

Step 4

Raise your strong arm, the one with the basketball, so your forearm is at a 90-degree angle from the floor.

Step 5

Take the shot. Extend your knees and forearm simultaneously while snapping your wrist forward. As the ball flies from your continue the forward wrist motion. It may seem like a worthless endeavor, but the follow-through is important for a good habit-forming shot.

Step 6

Practice. Practice. Practice. To become better at shooting the basketball you must practice. The mechanics of shooting the basketball is only the first step. Once you have that down, then the hard part starts. Learning range, arcs and the ability to shoot under pressure is important.
