Abs belts tighten and tone the abdominal muscles without the need for regular exercise. The belts use electronic muscle stimulation to make the muscles contract. After several weeks of using an abs belt, you may notice an improvement in endurance and strength of the abs. Brand names of ab belts includes the Slendertone Flex, Contour Abs Belt and Sharpentone Ab Belt.
Features
The best abs belt to purchase is the Slendertone Flex developed by BMR NeuroTech. The reason that this belt is preferred over other types is it is the only model that meets FDA requirements and has been approved by the FDA for strengthening, toning and firming abdominal muscles. Although the FDA does not state that it is unsafe to use belts by other manufacturers, it does advise of the potential for safety issues with unregulated devices.
Expert Insight
The effectiveness of the Slendertone has been proved in studies. A 2010 University of Wisconsin study focused on Slendertone's Bottom Toner product. The Bottom Toner uses the same technology as the abs belt from the company. After six weeks of using the Bottom Toner, participants experienced a 9 percent increase in strength and 29 percent increase in endurance. No diet and exercise changes were made by participants of the study.
Considerations
The Contour Abs Belt, Sharpentone Ab Belt and similar models may work as well as the Slendertone Flex. One thing to consider is the Contour Abs Belt does come with a diet and exercise plan to help you reach your fitness goals. The Slendertone Flex does not specify any other diet and exercise changes you should make.
Warning
None of the ab belts will give you six pack abs. If you have to lose weight in the belly area, you need to make dietary changes and make time for regular aerobic exercise. Although the abs belt can strengthen and tone a muscle, it has no effect on weight loss or girth reduction. Use of an abs belt should be discontinued if you experience any pain, burning or rashes.
