What Are the Health Benefits of 5-HTP?

The supplement 5-hydroxytryptophan, also known as 5-HTP, can be used to help treat psychiatric and neurological problems. This supplement is a form of an amino acid, tryptophan, which can be converted into other molecules that affect the way nerves work. Although some studies have found this supplement to be effective, there are concerns over the safety of 5-HTP supplements.

5-HTP Conversion

5-hydroxytryptophan is a derviative of the amino acid tryptophan. In addition to its role in forming new proteins, tryptophan can be converted into serotonin, a neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters are released into a space between nerve cells, known as synapses, when nerves are stimulated. Neurotransmitter release allows a nerve cell to pass along a chemical signal to other nearby nerves. Serotonin is important for regulating mood and emotions, and 5-HTP supplements makes it possible for the body to synthesize more serotonin, "Psychology Today" reports.

5-HTP and Depression

One of the main reasons to take 5-HTP supplements is when you are suffering from depression. Many people who are depressed have decreased levels of serotonin in their bodies; 5-HTP supplements could help correct this neurotransmitter deficiency. Many medications used for treating depression, including fluoxetine and and sertraline, commonly known as Prozac and Zoloft, also work by increasing the amount of serotonin in brain synapses. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 5-HTP supplements may be just as effective as these medications for treating depression.

Other Uses

Serotonin levels are also decreased in people suffering from fibromyalgia, which is a form of neurological dysfunction. 5-HTP supplements can help relieve some of the pain, stiffness and anxiety associated with fibromyalgia. You can also take 5-HTP to treat insomnia, as the increase in serotonin can also raise the levels of melatonin in the body, the National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes, which can help you fall asleep. 5-HTP supplements can also be used to treat obesity and hot flashes.

Safety

One of the biggest risks associated with 5-HTP supplements is a condition known as eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome or EMS. This may be due to a contaminant known as Peak X, the University of Maryland Medical Center notes, which has been found in tryptophan and 5-HTP supplements. EMS can cause severe muscle pain and may also affect the blood, skin and other organs in the body. 5-HTP supplements may also be toxic to the liver and brain, so talk with your doctor before taking 5-HTP supplements.
