Lymphedema is a painful and sometimes embarrassing condition that causes extreme swelling in the extremities, most often the arms or legs. Dr. Raymond Perrin has established a medical technique that may be of help to those with lymphedema. If you suffer from lymphedema, discuss Dr. Perrin's treatment with your doctor prior to trying this approach.
Lymphedema
Lymphedema occurs when the ducts and channels of the transport lymph are damaged or missing. This most often happens after cancer surgery which requires removal of lymph nodes. The accumulation of lymphatic fluid causes swelling and a feeling of tightness or heaviness. It can also affect the skin and even cause deformity and infection in the affected limb. Early treatment of lymphedema can help avoid long-term mobility problems.
Dr. Raymond Perrin
Dr. Raymond Perrin is from the United Kingdom. He earned his degree at the British School of Osteopathy in 1984. His initial studies were concentrated in sports medicine, but later he began working with patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or CFS, and Myalgic Encephalopathy, or ME, also known as fibromyalgia. Dr. Perrin spent 16 years researching the disorders and received his doctorate at the University of Salford in 2005.
Perrin Technique
Dr. Raymond Perrin's research has led him to believe that the buildup of toxins in the spinal and brain fluid cause the nervous system to overload and initiate a variety of symptoms. The Perrin Technique works on the theory that manually stimulating the fluid around the spinal cord and brain through massage will aid in the draining of these toxins. He believes that once the toxins are eliminated from the body, symptoms of CFS and ME will begin to disappear.
Considerations
Massage techniques that encourage lymph drainage are not for everyone, and could expose you to problems if you have certain health conditions. According to MayoClinic.com, it should be avoided by if you have active cancer, are undergoing radiation therapy, or have a skin infection, congestive heart failure or blood clots. As with any medical procedure, always consult with a healthcare provider who knows your entire medical history.
