Building a nutritional foundation for kids can be difficult. The foods they want to eat most are often not the healthiest foods. However, parents can sneak in nutritional foods by using some creativity. Depart from the prepackaged snack items in the grocery store and engage your kids in making a healthy snack, like fruit kabobs. Fruit kabobs are a fun, easy and nutritional snack that you can make with your kids.

Step 1

Choose a variety of fruits that can be cut into smaller pieces. Bananas, strawberries, watermelon, pineapple, apples, grapes, cantaloupe or honeydew melon are all good choices. Cut each fruit into 1- to 1 1/2-inch pieces that can be handled easily by your child. Place each type of fruit in a bowl of its own. To make it more interesting, group the bowls according to color.

Step 2

Use wooden skewers from the grocery store. These will be used to hold the fruit together. Depending on the age of your child, you may choose to cut off the sharper end of the skewer. If not, you should instruct your child on how to remove the fruit from the skewer to prevent hurting himself.

Step 3

Allow the kids to choose several pieces of fruit to add to their skewer. It is often helpful to make a few skewers before you start to provide them with examples of how they can make their own skewers. If some of the fruit choices are new to them, it can be helpful to cut some extra fruit that they can taste before making their skewer.

Step 4

Provide dipping sauces as an added treat. Yogurt, sugar-free chocolate syrup, granola or coconut can be used sparingly to make the kabobs more interesting.
