Vinegar, in particular apple cider vinegar, is a diuretic which can be used in small amounts to help eliminate fluid from the body. Diuretics may aid in breaking up fatty deposits in the body and flush them out through increased urinary output. Apple cider vinegar is also made from apples, which contain malic acid that aids in fat-burning. Enjoy most vinegars as part of a well-balanced diet to add flavor to dishes for little calories and to assist in weight-loss or maintenance.
Step 1
Use vinegar as a dressing over salads and vegetables. Unlike typical bottled salad dressings that are high in calories, fat and sugar, vinegar contains little to no calories, no fat and no sugar, depending on the brand purchased. Apple cider vinegar may be even more beneficial as it is less acidic than regular vinegars, making it easier for the body to digest.
Step 2
Combine vinegar with a light oil to make a more substantial dressing or glaze for meals such as salads, vegetables and even meat dishes. Healthy fats found in oils, such as canola and olive, help increase feelings of fullness, which can help you avoid cravings and overeating later. If making a homemade vinaigrette, use the ratio of 3 parts oil to 1 part vinegar.
Step 3
Dip vegetables such as carrot sticks, celery and cucumbers and bread into a vinegar-based dip. Combine 1/3 cup of olive oil, 1/4 cup vinegar with various spices to taste such as oregano, rosemary and pepper flakes in a bowl. Blend thoroughly with a spoon.
Step 4
Use vinegar as a condiment instead of ketchup, heavy sauces, cream or salt to flavor foods. Many condiments add additional calories and are high in sugar, fat and/or sodium. Use vinegar over foods such as potatoes, baked sweet potato fries, rice or even chicken flavored with lemongrass and herbs.
Step 5
Drink 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar before meals to help decrease your appetite. This is just lore, backed by no scientific evidence, but the unpleasant taste may prevent you from overeating at meals.
