Yasmin, also known as drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, is an oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. According to the Mayo Clinic, the pill contains the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones thicken the cervical mucus and thin the uterine lining. This ultimately prevents a sperm from meeting an egg. Yasmin is available in tablet form, and can be provided only with a doctor's prescription.
Step 1
Take the first yellow Yasmin pill with a glass of water on the day your doctor indicated. This may be the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period commences.
Step 2
Continue to take one Yasmin pill a day at least 24 hours apart. Make sure to take the Yasmin pills in the order presented in the package. This is very important to ensure pregnancy prevention.
Step 3
Use condoms when you engage in sexual intercourse for the first seven days of using Yasmin. According to the Mayo Clinic, it will take your body seven days to adjust to Yasmin, and you can still get pregnant during this crucial time frame.
Step 4
Store Yasmin at room temperature and far from the reach of children.
Tips and Warnings
- Read the instructions that your doctor provided with the Yasmin birth control pills. Go to your family doctor before your pills run out to obtain another prescription for Yasmin. Do not skip pills even if you are not engaging in sexual intercourse. If you miss one yellow "active" pill, take it as soon as possible and continue to follow your regular schedule. If you miss two yellow "active" pills consecutively during weeks one or two, take two pills on that day and two pills the next. Then continue to take one pill a day as regularly scheduled. If you miss two yellow "active" pills consecutively during week three, throw out the Yasmin pack and start a new one if you started taking Yasmin the first day of your period. If you started on Sunday, take one Yasmin pill until the following Sunday and then throw out the Yasmin package and start a new one. If you miss three or more "active" yellow pills during the first three weeks, follow the same steps as if you missed two yellow "active" pills consecutively during week three.
- Do not remove pills from their container. The pills are strategically placed so that you take them in a specific order. Always take the birth control pills in order. The Mayo Clinic states that each pill contains a different amount of estrogen and progesterone, so taking Yasmin out of order puts you at risk for pregnancy. Try to decrease or quit smoking when taking Yasmin. According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking and taking Yasmin can increase your chances of developing serious side effects such as stomach pains and jaundice (yellow skin).
