Many diets discourage sugar consumption, as foods like chocolate, candy, pastries, and cookies promote weight gain and spike your blood sugar levels. However, natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables are okay to eat because they contain plenty of essential vitamins and minerals. It is difficult to eliminate sugar entirely from your diet; however, you can limit its consumption by choosing the right foods.

Step 1

Reduce the amount of sodas, fruit juices and other sugary beverages you ingest daily. If you cannot stand quitting cold turkey, choose the low-sugar or sugar-free version of the beverage.

Step 2

Purchase foods and drinks only after you have carefully read the labels. Every label contains the grams of sugar per serving.

Step 3

Find food and beverages that contain sugar substitutes. Some of the most popular include: stevia, sucralose and aspartame. If you enjoy the taste of desserts like cakes, candy and flavored teas, look for items that use these ingredients in lieu of sugar.

Step 4

Be aware of alternative names for sugar. While some labels state the product contains little or no sugar, there are also other forms of sugar that may be used as a replacement. Fructose, high fructose corn syrup and maltodextrin are a few alternative names you should be wary of.
