Sinus problems occur as a result of inflammation in the nasal cavity and sinuses due to bacteria, fungi, viruses, or allergies to pollen, pet dander, dust, mold, and other airborne pollutants. Food is another often overlooked allergen underlying sinus problems. While theoretically any food could cause an allergic response, there are certain foods that promote the growth of bacteria or fungus and production of mucous and therefore are among the most common culprits of sinus problems. The best method of determining food allergies and sensitivities is through a food elimination diet supervised by your physician or through a blood test.
Mycotoxins
Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced from mold or fungi that are present in food. Mycotoxins may be produced by molds growing in food, or may have contaminated foods at the time of growth, production, or sourcing. They can not only increase susceptibility to developing fungal infections and respiratory responses, but can also increase risk for developing certain cancers. Mycotoxins are known to be found among wheat, grain and feed crops, as well as on corn, fruit and groundnuts.
Dairy Products
Milk, butter, cheese, eggs and other related dairy products are among the top mucous-producing foods. This mucous lines our nasal cavity and further complicates existing sinus problems, so it is best to avoid dairy products as much as possible. Certain cheeses made from fungi and hard cheeses containing mold may also be at risk for containing mycotoxins.
Refined Sugar
White sugar, sugar cane, sugar beets, and high fructose corn syrup should be avoided because they may promote the growth of bacteria within our body by altering our chemical and hormonal balance. They may also promote the growth of fungi that need sugar to thrive.
Gluten
Sensitivities to gluten-rich foods like wheat, rye, barley, oats, and other whole grains are common and may cause an inflammatory reaction that worsens the sinuses. Gluten can be difficult to avoid because it is present in most breads, crackers, and cereals. Barley, wheat, and rye may also be susceptible to contamination from mycotoxins from fungi.
Soy
Like dairy products, soy thickens the mucous in our body, so it is best to avoid soy beans, soy milk, and any other soy-derived products.
Corn
Corn is grown in climates conducive to mycotoxic contamination, so corn and any food products made from corn may be contaminated.
Peanuts
Allergic responses to peanuts are among the most common. In addition, peanuts and other groundnuts are frequently contaminated with mold.
Food Additives
Sulfites, aspartame, and monosodium glutamate (MSG) are examples of additives that are put in foods to help preserve them and make them taste better. However, these additives are known to cause headaches and other allergic reactions and can exacerbate sinus problems.
Caffeine and Alcohol
Caffeine and alcohol may both act as diuretics, ridding your body of excess water. Inflamed sinuses should be kept moist, so it's best to avoid coffee, tea, and other caffeinated beverages. The grains and fruits used to make beer, liquor, and wine may be contaminated with mycotoxins, as well, promoting fungal growth and immune suppression.
