Because of the various facial muscles lying under the surface of the skin, humans have a greater range of facial expression than any other living creatures on the planet, according to the "Los Angeles Times." While many champion the benefits of facial exercises to slow the aging process by firming and toning muscles, the jury is still out on whether they really work, as many doctors are divided on the issue. However, almost all agree that facial exercises cannot hurt you, so there is no harm in trying them to see if they work for you.

Step 1

Place your index fingers just above your eyes and pull down while raising your eyebrows to help firm and tighten the skin on your forehead. Repeat 10 times.

Step 2

Sit straight with your eyes closed and relaxed. While keeping your eyes closed, look down and then up as far as possible, holding each position for a few seconds to exercise your eyes. Repeat 10 to 15 times.

Step 3

Sit straight in a chair, tilting your head back and looking upward toward the ceiling. While keeping your lips closed and relaxed, move your lower lip as far over your top lip as possible for 10 seconds. Relax for a few seconds before repeating the exercise 10 times.

Step 4

Place your three middle fingers, excluding your thumb and pinky finger, on your cheeks on both sides of your face. Push your cheeks in a downward motion with your hands while smiling as big as possible to create countermotion. Repeat as many times as desired, making sure to keep your head leaning back the whole time.

Step 5

Look straight ahead at a wall or distant object, keeping your chin level. Turn your head to the right so that it is even with your right shoulder, then push your head backward, holding the position for six to eight seconds. Return your head to the original starting position. Repeat the motion on your left side, holding the position for six to eight seconds. Repeat the exercise for six repetitions on each side, alternating back and forth.

Step 6

Push your lips outward, making a round shape with your mouth while stretching forward. Smile as wide as possible, and then return to the original round shape to exercise your cheeks. Repeat 10 times per session.
