The Sonoma Diet, a commercial weight-loss plan, emphasizes healthy eating and healthy living. As part of this focus, the diet introduces "super foods" that dieters are encouraged to consume frequently. The original diet contained 10 of these foods, but with an extensive revamp of the diet in early 2011, two super foods were added.
Sonoma Diet
The Sonoma Diet focuses on creating a healthy lifestyle based on an eating pattern similar to that of the Mediterranean region of Europe and the Sonoma area of California. Instead of restricting whole food groups, such as carbs or fat, the Sonoma Diet creates meal plans based around specific healthy foods. The plan is divided into three phases, called waves. The first wave, intended to produce rapid weight loss, lasts 10 days and involves refraining from refined carbohydrates and added sugars while practicing portion control. As the diet progresses, you move into slower, steady weight loss and eventually into the final maintenance wave.
Original 10 Super Foods
Of the original 10 super foods included in the Sonoma Diet, four are vegetables: broccoli, spinach, bell pepper and tomato. These vegetables are high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that might help protect the body from cancer and other diseases. Fruits included are blueberries, grapes and strawberries, each of which contains some of the highest antioxidant levels of all fruits. Consuming grapes in the form of wine is considered acceptable on the Sonoma Diet. Whole grains are included for their fiber and nutrient content. Olive oil and almonds also are included because they are high in monounsaturated fats that boost heart health.
Additional Two Super Foods
In addition to the original 10 super foods, the New Sonoma Diet released in early 2011 added two new foods to the list: citrus fruits and beans. Citrus fruits, such as lemons, limes, oranges and tangerines, are high in vitamin C and other antioxidants. Beans are an excellent source of protein and fiber that can be used in place of meat for some meals.
Considerations
Simply consuming the specific super foods of the Sonoma Diet can boost your overall health, since they all are nutrient-dense, healthy foods; however, the program does move beyond simply recommending these foods by including portion control advice as well as information about ways to combine these foods with other healthy ingredients to create healthy meals throughout the day.
