When you want to lose weight, diet and exercise are the best methods to achieve results. Although you probably hope to see quick results, sometimes weight loss is a slower process. Slow weight loss may delay your results, but the good news is that any weight lost is more likely to stay off. One to 2 lbs. per week is considered safe, reasonable weight loss. Some factors may be responsible if you aren't losing weight at this rate.

Not Exercising Enough

You should be exercising at least 30 minutes five times a week for your good health. This may provide some weight loss, depending on the type of exercise. However, it may not be enough to lose weight, and you may need to increase the amount of time you spend exercising to at least an hour a day on most days of the week.

Not Strenuous Enough Exercise

All exercise is good, but not all exercise forms are equal. Different types of activities burn different amounts of calories. For example, walking at a slow pace does not burn as many calories as running. You may need to choose a more intense form of exercise to boost your weight loss.

Too Many Calories

Consuming too many calories can slow your weight-loss progress. Even if you don't think you're eating much, hidden calories lurk in many foods, including restaurant meals and drinks such as frozen coffee and smoothies. These extra calories can easily sabotage your weight-loss efforts. Keep a food diary and track your calorie intake to see if you can cut additional calories.

Not Drinking Enough Water

Drinking too little water can slow your weight-loss efforts, too. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends drinking eight to 10 glasses of water every day. Drinking water has many benefits for weight loss, including making you feel more full and helping you resist eating when you aren't hungry. Water also flushes out your kidneys, reducing water retention.
