An elliptical machine is an effective means of cardiovascular exercise that is frequently marketed as a means of engaging in physical activity without placing stress on your joints -- a low impact exercise. However when not used correctly an elliptical machine can place unwanted stress on the bottoms of your feet. This pain often results in plantar fasciitis. Always consult your doctor if you experience foot pain while using an elliptical machine.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of your foot. This thick band of tissue -- known as the plantar fascia-- connects your heel bone with your toes. Plantar fasciitis can cause a stabbing pain on the bottom of your foot and is often the result of overuse. Runners, those who are overweight and pregnant women most commonly develop plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis can also be caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes or using improper mechanics during exercise. Women are more likely to develop plantar fasciitis than men. This condition can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications, injections and physical therapy.
Footwear
It is important to wear a good-fitting pair of sneakers while using an elliptical machine. Your sneakers should have shock-absorption, leave enough room for your toes to wiggle and not be worn or damaged. Shoes should appropriately fit your feet -- a running shoe store or a podiatrist can best help determine the appropriate shoes for your feet. For example, excessive pronation or flat-feet can lead to pain in the heel and bottom of your feet. Finding a shoe that adequately supports your heel can help to reduce heel pain while using an elliptical machine.
Stretching
Stretching your feet before using an elliptical machine can help to loosen the tendons, muscles and ligaments in your feet. By stretching, you are reducing your risk of injury or developing pain as the result of using an elliptical machine. Before using your elliptical machine, stretch for five to 10 minutes. Your foot stretches can include walking on your toes, walking on your heels, making circles with your ankles, writing the alphabet with your big toe or rolling a can underneath the arches of your feet.
Elliptical Machine Use
Using an elliptical machine properly is the best means of preventing foot pain. Your feet should be placed flat and firmly on the pedals of your elliptical machine. With your feet placed flat on the machine, you are evenly distributing your weight across your feet. Avoid placing a bulk of your weight on your toes. Pushing off your toes with each stride you take on your elliptical machine can cause pain and injury to the tissue on the bottom of your foot -- your plantar fascia. This can lead to the degeneration of the plantar fascia, which can leave you with foot pain after using an elliptical machine.
