Sinus infections may be caused by many types of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. Sinus infections, notes the National Center for Biotechnology Information, are also known as sinusitis and occur when your sinus openings become plugged or excessive mucus accumulates within your sinuses, which in turn allows germs to flourish. Herbs have long been used as a natural treatment for this condition, but you should always exercise caution when taking herbs.

Sinus Infection Information

FamilyDoctor.org states that your sinuses are air-filled cavities in your cheek bones, jaw bone and the bone beneath your eyebrows. Sinus infections occur when your sinuses become inflamed. According to FamilyDoctor.org, any factor that causes swelling in your sinuses can cause sinusitis. Possible causes of this condition include changes in barometric pressure, allergies, decongestant nasal sprays, smoking, swimming and other medical conditions, such as growths called polyps. Headache, fever and pain or pressure in your sinuses are among the most common symptoms of this condition.

Appropriate Herbs

Certain herbal remedies may help treat your sinus infection or various symptoms associated with your sinus infection. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that some herbs help treat headaches associated with sinus infections, including European elder, common sorrel, cowslip, European vervain, gentian, Chinese skullcap, devil's claw, feverfew and willow bark. Other herbs that may effectively treat sinus infections include bayberry, bitter orange and herbs that reduce congestion, such as fenugreek and red clover.

A Potent Herb

Red clover is a potent herb in the treatment of sinus infections. According to nutrition researcher Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," red clover effectively treats bacterial infections, respiratory tract inflammation and bronchitis. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that red clover has historically been used to treat cancer and various respiratory tract ailments. The plants' flower heads are used to make herbal supplements.

Additional Information

Sinus infection complications, though rare, may occur if this condition is left untreated or occurs in individuals with weak immune systems and include abscess, meningitis, infection of the skin around your eyes and bone infection, or osteomyelitis. If you have a sinus infection, it is wise to seek care from a health care professional. If you are considering using herbs to help treat your sinus infection, discuss herb-related issues with your doctor beforehand.
