Dozens of exercise machines are available to the average fitness enthusiast. Often, machines that appear to offer similar workouts are difficult to choose between. Knowing the difference between exercise bikes and treadmills will help you make informed decisions about your fitness equipment and promote your exercise goals.

Exercise Bike Benefits

Exercise bikes are an excellent option if you suffer from any joint pain or find the impact of running uncomfortable. They also provide rehabilitative options for those recovering from knee replacement surgery. Exercise bikes isolate the legs, helping you to tone and define your leg muscles. The bikes are generally considered safer than treadmills, because you are seated, and they take up less room than standard treadmills, making them better for many home gyms with limited space.

Treadmill Benefits

Treadmills are classic options for those that enjoy walking, jogging, running or sprinting for exercise. They provide more complete body workouts than exercise bikes because they use muscles throughout your entire body. As a result, you are more likely to burn more calories on a treadmill, making them better for weight loss. Treadmills are also better for those that want the freedom to transfer their workouts outside without the purchase of additional equipment, including a bicycle.

Similarities

For all their differences, exercise bikes and treadmills are very similar. Both exercise bikes and treadmills offer excellent cardiovascular exercise, promote weight loss and increase muscle tone. Though each machine accomplishes these goals in slightly different ways, the end result is quite similar. Choosing which one is better is often more a function of personal preference than exercise benefits. Both machines also offer the option of alternative workouts, including regular bike riding and running outside.

Considerations

One of the most frequent causes of failed exercise programs is giving up due to boredom or lack of interest. Choose the machine that you enjoy using more. If you use machines at a gym, consider which type of machine is usually available. You may even consider using both to reap the benefits of each. In the end, the machine that you are more comfortable using is the best machine for you.
