You want to stay active as you age -- yoga is a good exercise choice for you to improve both your physical body and mental well-being. Chair yoga may be right for you if you are out of shape or simply unable to do all of the postures while standing. You will still get the benefits of a yoga practice while making modifications to accommodate your limitations. Consult a doctor before beginning an exercise regimen.

Balance and Muscle Tone

As you age, your body changes shape, and this includes a loss of muscle mass. This can make it more difficult for you to balance, as well as change the way your body loses and gains weight. Yoga will not only help strengthen your muscles, it can also improve your flexibility and ability to stay balanced. Performing these exercises from a chair will give you the benefits of the workout without worrying about falling over or straining your muscles.

Help for Chronic Conditions

Doing yoga on a regular basis can help improve many health conditions like cancer, depression, and high blood pressure. It can also ease chronic pain, arthritis or sleep problems associated with these and other causes. Regular exercise like doing chair yoga a few times a week can help you lose weight and keep it off for good, thereby reducing your chances of developing diseases associated with obesity. Yoga also helps strengthen your immune system, which will better enable your body to ward off illnesses.

Mental Well-Being

Yoga combines physical movements with the practice of deep breathing, which allows you to focus both on what your body is doing and what is going on inside of you. It teaches you to calm your mind and to relax, which can improve your mood and attitude in all areas of your life. Doing yoga can also help you better handle stress, increase your energy level and even give you a more optimistic outlook.

Considerations

Look for a yoga class designed for people of your age and fitness level. Tell the teacher about any health conditions or concerns you have, and ask your doctor before you start doing yoga. While chair yoga can prove beneficial in a variety of areas, do not use it in lieu of any medications your physician has prescribed. Do not do any exercises that cause you undue pain or tax any injured areas. If you do become injured, seek medical attention, and get permission from your healthcare provider before you start exercising again.
