Your metabolism is the process by which your body converts foods you consume into energy. It also regulates a variety of vital functions within your body, such as blood circulation, breathing and hormone levels. Metabolism burns fat; boosting the process can lead to loss of unwanted fat weight. A few key points go a long way in helping you increase your body's metabolism naturally.

Step 1

Eat a healthy, hearty breakfast every day. Eating breakfast provides a jump-start to your metabolism after your body's fasting period during sleep. Choose healthy foods rich in fiber, protein and complex carbohydrates such as fruits and vegetables, whole grain toast, granola and low-fat dairy products. If you tend to be hurried or rushed in the morning, allow extra time to eat this crucial meal by getting up earlier.

Step 2

Snack between meals to keep your metabolism burning. Don't allow yourself to feel famished -- your metabolism slows during these periods, so make healthy snack choices to stoke the flames of your metabolism. Granola bars, apples, baby carrots and whole grain crackers are examples of healthy foods on which to snack to keep your energy levels up as well as increase your metabolism.

Step 3

Incorporate spicy foods into your diet. Adding spices such as cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper and chili peppers to meals you eat can raise your body temperature and speed up your heart rate -- key factors in increasing metabolism, reports Le Cordon Bleu.

Step 4

Take green tea extract, which is generally available in capsules as well as in liquid form at most pharmacies and nutrition stores. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, substances called catechins contained within green tea have been linked to increased metabolism, which can help you shed excess fat pounds and maintain a healthy weight.

Step 5

Exercise at least five times a week, for 30 minutes or more per session. Combining a healthy diet with a regular exercise routine is essential to increase your body's metabolic rate. Simple physical activities such as brisk walking, bicycling, swimming laps and strength training go a long way to firing up your metabolism to keep you trim while improving your energy level, strength and overall health.

Tips and Warnings

  • Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is crucial. Water helps your body digest foods, contributing to an increased metabolic rate.
  • If you have a medical condition such as heart disease or diabetes, consult with your physician before increasing your metabolism through foods, dietary changes or exercise.
