Amoxicillin is an antibiotic marketed as Amoxil that is used in the treatment of bacterial infections. It may be used to treat such maladies as ear infections, throat infections, nose infections, skin infections, lower respiratory infections and gonorrhea. Amoxicillin also may be used in combination with other drugs to fight other infections. Amoxil is available as an oral suspension, capsules, pills and chewable pills.
Non-Serious Side Effects
Taking amoxicillin treatment for infections may produce a few non-serious and temporary side effects. You need not notify your doctor about any of these unless they continue after you have acclimated to the drug, after 48 hours. These types of side effects include patches of white on the tongue or in the mouth, mild diarrhea, discharge from the vagina, itching of the vagina, headaches or a sore tongue or mouth.
Serious Typical Side Effects
While these types of effects are serious, they do not occur in everyone. According to the Mayo Clinic, these aren't that common but require emergency medical treatment and immediate cessation of the drug. These include skin itching, hives, a skin rash, rapid breathing, irregular breathing or shortness of breath, a fever, scaly or red skin, sudden lightheadedness or feeling faint, pain in the joints, facial swelling or facial puffiness.
Serious Rare Side Effects
Other serious side effects from taking amoxicillin may be rare. You should notify your physician of such side effects as auditory hallucinations, sensory hallucinations, visual hallucinations, abdominal pain or cramps, seizures, skin yellowing, lessened urine output, tenderness in the abdomen, fear including the fear you are going to die soon, severe diarrhea with or without blood, eye yellowing, depression, uncommon bleeding, abnormal bruising, vomiting, injection site pain, nausea, anxiety, agitation and confusion. Others may include excreting crystals in the urine that cause urinary pain, hyperactivity, insomnia, changes in behavior, dizziness and discoloration of the teeth.
