A microdiscectomy is a surgical procedure that corrects herniated discs in your lumbar, or lower spine. Discs become herniated when the disc material slips out, pressing on the nerves in your spine. This can cause pain, numbness and tingling in your lower back and legs. The procedure uses a small incision to access the herniated disc and remove it to prevent the disc from pressing further on the nerve. Although the procedure is associated with a faster recovery than traditional back surgery, it is important that you take precautions when attempting to exercise following surgery.

Post-Operative Precautions

Discuss with your physician the precautions you should take following microdiscectomy surgery. Examples of precautions include refraining from lifting more than 5 lb., bending forward at the waist or twisting the back. These activities can increase your risk for experiencing a back injury following surgery and should be avoided anywhere from two to four weeks after surgery. Check with your physicians before beginning a stretching or strengthening program.

Returning to Exercise

Your physician will evaluate your healing progress during your post-operative follow-up visit. If your pain following surgery has subsided, you may be able to return to exercise one to two weeks after surgery. However, you may not be able to engage in higher-impact sports until four to six weeks after surgery due to the increased risk for injury.

Stretching and Strengthening

Stretching and strengthening exercises following microdiscectomy enhance your recovery. You can perform stretching exercises almost immediately after surgery to prevent your muscles from becoming stiff. Examples include placing your hands on your hips and leaning back slightly. You can also lie on your back and gently press up with your arms to stretch your lower back. Pulling your knees toward your chest while lying down or standing also stretches your lumbar spine. These stretching and strengthening exercises can be performed on a daily basis.

Exercise Examples

Good exercise examples following microdiscectomy surgery include walking, thanks to its role as a low-impact exercise. You may only be able to perform short walks following surgery. However, set a goal of working your way up to walking three miles per day. Exercise increases the blood supply to your lower back, which enhances your healing. Other good exercises include jogging, cycling, swimming and using an elliptical machine. These cardiovascular exercises help improve your mobility following surgery, enabling you to return to your regular activities more quickly.
