Herbal diets are developed around the weight loss properties and nutritional value of a specific herb or combination of herbs. Many have valid claims and offer a variety of benefits, but a few are based on hype and conjecture and are of little value nutritionally. Deciding to try an herbal diet, means reading as much as possible on how it works and learning what needs to be done for it to be a success. Never try a diet without consulting a physician.

Hoodia Diets

Hoodia gordonii is a desert plant similar to a cactus. The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research began research on the plant in the 1970s and isolated the component, P57, according to Diet.com. P57 was shown to have strong appetite suppressant capabilities. Phytopharm, a pharmaceutical company in Great Britain, partnered with Pfizer of the United States and began to develop and market hoodia as a diet and weight loss aid in the 1990s.

There are 13 types of hoodia. Hoodia gordonii is the only one that suppresses the appetite and makes the brain believe that food and water are not needed. Hoodia capsules are formulated in different strengths and with a variety of different ingredients. True hoodia is hard to come by and very expensive. It is unclear which hoodia products contain actual hoodia or how much, according to Diet.com.

Acai Berry Diet

The Acai Berry Diet revolves around the health benefits of a small berry that grows in the rain forests of South America. Acai berries are known for their antioxidant properties, as well as their ability to improve digestion and detoxify the body, according to Every Diet.

Diets with acai berries as a main ingredient also use a variety of other elements to make them successful. Proper diet and exercise are used in conjunction with acai berries to help the body eliminate toxins and boost metabolism. Acai berries can be consumed in capsule form or as juice. Even though acai berries offer proven health benefits, there are many products on the market that are possible scams.
