The colon of an adult is approximately 5 ft long and connects to the small intestine. It is responsible for absorbing water and salts from partially digested food and eliminating waste. Many people consume a variety of colon-cleansing supplements or have colonics to keep this region properly functioning. Oftentimes these measures can be expensive and even disruptive to the gastrointestinal tract. By eating certain foods, you can promote a healthy and cleansed colon. You should always consult your physician before changing your diet regimen.

Step 1

Add high-fiber foods to your diet to keep your colon free of waste by promoting regularity. The Harvard School of Public Health says that the colon is extremely responsive to dietary fiber and can help promote its function. Eat oatmeal, whole-grain cereal, bread and pasta, brown rice and other fiber-rich foods throughout the day. Children and adults should aim for 20 g of dietary fiber each day from these foods, whereas teens and men may need up to 30 to 35 g.

Step 2

Eat a variety of fruits. Fruits are an excellent source of water and fiber that help to circumvent constipation and encourage colon health. Fruits are also high in antioxidants, which may help to safeguard your colon's health. A December 2001 study published in the "American Journal of Gastroenterology" found that patients with polyps had low levels of micronutrient antioxidants in their colon tissue and experienced a higher rate of free radical damage compared to normal subjects. High-antioxidant, high-fiber fruits include blueberries, cranberries and kiwis.

Step 3

Supplement your diet with a wealthy amount of dark green leafy vegetables. This variety is high in insoluble fiber that quickly moves through your digestive tract to stimulate bowel movements and keep the colon cleansed. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals says that the folate content in these vegetables may help to reduce your risk of colon cancer.

Step 4

Squeeze fresh lemon juice in your beverages, teas, salads and other dishes. In the book "Health Begins in the Colon," naturopath Edward Group says that lemons are naturally antiseptic, which helps to reduce the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the bowel. This fruit also helps eliminate waste more efficiently and may help reduce diarrhea or constipation for a clean colon. Lemons are also high in the antioxidant vitamin C. Group recommends using organic lemons rather than lemon juice concentrate to garner the full benefits.

Tips and Warnings

  • Always drink an abundance of water throughout the day. This will help keep your colon flushed and ensure the proper absorption and function of the food you're eating. A general rule of thumb is to drink eight, 8-oz glasses daily.
  • If you're not accustomed to eating a high fiber diet, you may experience some minor digestive disruption such as bloating and gas. Build up to your daily fiber intake to avoid any discomfort.
