As its name suggests, a clear liquid diet consists only of liquid foods that you can see through. Your doctor may prescribe a clear liquid diet for several reasons. Clear liquids keep your digestive tract clear and are easily digested.

Features

A clear liquid diet consists of more than just plain water. You can consume broth, gelatin, ice pops, clear juices and sodas while on a clear liquid diet. The liquids must be at room temperature, and you are usually required to avoid any foods with bits of fruit, noodles or any trace of solid food. Dark-colored liquids -- such as those colored red, purple and brown -- may not be allowed, as they can affect the outcomes of specific tests.

Medical Procedures and Surgeries

A clear liquid diet may be indicated before or after medical procedures or surgeries. A colonoscopy, for example, is an outpatient procedure that requires a pre-diet of liquids only. This ensures the colon and digestive tract are clear for the scope. If you stray from the liquid diet, your test results may be rendered inaccurate, and you will be required to repeat the procedure. You may also be put on a clear liquid diet following certain abdominal surgeries. After having gastric bypass surgery, for example, you are advised to eat only clear liquids so that the surgical line in your stomach may heal.

Digestive Problems

If you have suffered a severe bout of diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, your doctor may put you on a clear liquid diet for a day or two to allow your system to heal. Your doctor may prescribe a specific meal plan to ensure you obtain all the proteins, fluids, salt and minerals essential for health and energy. Because liquids are easier to digest than solid food, the healing process in your digestive tract may be hastened.

Mouth Problems

People with tooth problems or mouth cancers may need to follow a clear liquid diet. In such cases, the diet may need to be followed for a longer period of time. Your medical adviser may ask you to include nonfat dry milk powder, instant breakfast powder, strained meats, butter and sugar syrups to boost your calorie intake.
