Judo Fighting Techniques

If you watch a mixed martial arts match, you will likely see several judo techniques. This Japanese martial art has heavily influenced other fighting styles. Judo teaches effective ways to throw, pin and submit an opponent. A skilled judo practitioner can successfully end a fight without throwing a single punch or kick. The tomoe nage, kesa gatame, kata juji jime and juji gatame are just some of judo's effective fighting techniques.

Tomoe Nage

Judo has a large arsenal of ground techniques. If you want to perform these moves, then you need to get your opponent to the ground. Judo throws can help you accomplish this feat. The tomoe nage is a circular throw that can surprise your opponent and forcefully throw him to the floor. To perform this technique, use your left hand to grip his sleeve under his right elbow. Grab his lapel with your right hand and place your right foot on his stomach. Quickly fall backward as you pull down on your opponent's upper body and throw him over you with your right foot. Your opponent should land on his back.

Kesa Gatame

After you take an opponent to the ground, you can limit his ability to attack with a judo pin. The kesa gatame allows you to hold down your opponent when he is on his back. To perform the kesa gatame, sit to the right side of your opponent and wrap your right arm around his neck like a scarf. Grip your opponent's lapel with your right hand. Tightly hold the opponent's right arm under your left armpit so he cannot attack with it. Lean on your opponent's body to make it difficult for him to move. If necessary, you can perform strangleholds or arm locks from this position.

Kata Juji Jime

The kata juji jime is a stranglehold that restricts blood flow to the brain and can cause unconsciousness. This technique can be executed while you are on top of your opponent or if he is on top of you. To perform this technique, place your left fingers under your opponent's collar on the left side of his neck. Your left palm should face upward so that you can grip the outside of his collar with your thumb. Cross your right arm under your left arm to grip the opponent's collar on the opposite side. Place your right thumb under his collar with your palm facing downward. Forcefully pull inward with each hand to execute the stranglehold.

Juji Gatame

The juji gatame is a popular judo technique that is typically applied when your opponent is on his back. This cross arm lock is performed while lying perpendicular to your opponent. Place your legs across the top of your opponent's chest and hold his arm between your legs. Tightly hold his wrist to your chest with both of your hands. Lean back and raise your hips to apply pressure to his elbow joint.
