Exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle regardless of age. There are many types of fitness programs, but whatever form you choose, always check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program. Don't be daunted by the array of gadgets and machines advertised on television. Keep your exercise equipment simple and try to maintain a regular workout schedule for best results.

Footwear

Proper footwear may be the most important piece of exercise equipment, especially for older folks. Always wear a comfortable pair of sneakers designed for walking or cross training. This type of sneaker offers enough cushion to protect delicate joints and provides foot and back support. Never exercise in street shoes, loafers or flats as the soles of these shoes are not designed for active movement and could lead to injury.

Floor Mats and Exercise Balls

Whether you choose to exercise at home or at a gym, padded floor mats are an essential piece of equipment for seniors. Floor mats are useful when stretching before a workout or for use during exercises performed lying down. They provide a soft surface to lie on for individuals who have trouble lying on hard surfaces. Floor mats are also used in exercise programs like yoga and Pilates. Exercise balls are useful for a variety of exercises and help develop balance and coordination. They come in several sizes and are available at most sporting goods stores.

Hand and Wrist Weights

Hand weights are useful for retirees participating in aerobics programs or for those that enjoy walking. They are inexpensive and come in a range of weights starting around 1 lb. You don't need heavy weights to increase the intensity of a workout. Light wrist weights are great for individuals who would like the added benefits of additional weight, but have trouble holding hand weights. Try placing them around the ankles during walking or while doing chores around the house.

Pool Equipment

Many retirees enjoy the benefits that come with exercising in the water. Water aerobics programs are low impact and provide excellent cardiovascular workouts. Pool noodles and foam weights are often used during water exercise. You can find these at most fitness stores and sometimes in the outdoors sections of a sporting goods store. A pair of goggles are handy if you plan to go under water, as well as nose and ear plugs.

Exercise Machines

Exercise machines such as treadmills and elliptical machines provide a way to stay active even when the weather is unfavorable. Recumbent bikes are also popular, but may be uncomfortable for individuals with back problems. Retirees should try to choose exercise machines that utilize hydraulics as they are easier on joints than traditional weight machines.
