Just because breathing is an involuntary body function does not mean you cannot train yourself to breathe differently, or more effectively. Breathing exercises do more than deliver oxygen; they also can relieve tension, improve your performance during exercise and even help treat some medical conditions. The best breathing exercises typically take no longer than 15 or 20 minutes per day but have multiple benefits.

Belly Breathing

The best belly breathing exercises deepen breathing, cleanse the lungs, promote relaxation and increase energy. Try a simple deep breathing exercise by lying on your back. Support your neck and knees with small pillows. Press on your stomach with your palms, with your middle fingers slightly touching. Slowly inhale, filling your belly with air. Your fingertips should separate as you take in air. Exhale and continue this type of breathing for five minutes.

Pranayama Breathing

In reporting on the best breathing exercise to reduce the symptoms of asthma, MayoClinic.com says people who practice pranayama breathing -- a type of deep, regulated breathing typically done during yoga or meditation -- may be able to decrease the amount of asthma medication they take. A full yoga breathing exercise involves abdominal and chest breathing. Inhale, expanding first your abdomen and then your chest. When you exhale, first empty your chest and then your abdomen. Completely empty your abdomen before inhaling again. Repeat this cycle 20 times, keeping the pace slow and natural.

Prolonged Exhale

Shallow breathing from the chest only often results in people not properly clearing their lungs. You can rectify this problem with a quick exercise called prolonged exhale. Inhale for two counts and exhale for four counts. Repeat this process for a few cycles to eliminate trapped air from your lungs.

Chinese Breath Exercise

Qigong or Chi kung is the Chinese tradition of doing different types of breathing exercises. One of the easier exercises is done during Tai chi and can help focus your energy and open your mind. Start with three quick inhalations through your nostrils. During the first inhalation, lift your arms to shoulder height. On the second inhalation, stretch your arms to the sides. On the third inhalation, lift your arms overhead. Exhale through your mouth, lowering your arms. Repeat ten times.
