Some women develop a long list of foods to avoid during pregnancy, but there are some foods you'll want to avoid even before conception occurs. Avoiding certain foods may help ensure a healthy pregnancy and even increase your chances of conception.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption is unsafe during pregnancy. Avoid or limit your alcohol consumption if you are trying to conceive, as you may not know right away when you become pregnant. According to BabyHopes.com, alcohol can also reduce fertility, so it's best to abstain or consume it in moderation when trying to conceive.

Caffeine

Research regarding the effects of caffeine on fertility shows mixed results. According to Babycenter.com, some research indicates too much caffeine can increase the risk of miscarriage and can decrease fertility by 27 percent. Most experts recommend limiting caffeine to 300 mg per day, which is about two to three cups of coffee. Also watch out for other caffeine-containing foods like tea, chocolate, energy drinks and coffee-flavored ice cream. Caffeine also interferes with the absorption of iron and calcium, two important nutrients in pregnancy.

Fish

Some types of fish contain mercury, a contaminant that is dangerous for unborn babies. These fish include shark, mackerel and tilefish. While you might have heard pregnant women should avoid these fish, it's also a good idea to avoid them while trying to become pregnant. According to Babycenter.com, mercury builds up in your body and can remain there up to a year.

Raw Meat and Dairy

Undercooked or raw meats and unpasteurized dairy can contain bacteria called listeria. This includes foods such as sushi, smoked seafood, deli meats, soft cheeses and unpasteurized milk. Listeria causes flu-like symptoms, headaches, convulsions and other symptoms. It's especially important for pregnant women not to consume these foods due to a 20 percent increased risk of getting sick from listeria. It's also important for women who are trying to conceive to avoid these foods because the bacteria can cause miscarriage early in the first trimester, before some women even know they are pregnant.
