Review of the Reef Electric Folding Bicycle

Reef Bikes is an Australian company that produces a wide array of electric bikes. Reef produces a folding model that retails for $1,799 on the Reef website as of 2011. The company also offers free delivery anywhere in Australia.

Benefits

The Reef Electric Folding Bicycle is great for people who live in tight quarters and for people who live in the city and wish to avoid paying high prices for parking, according to the manufacturer. Also, the bike provides an eco-friendly means of transportation and helps owners avoid paying high fuel prices. And as of 2011, Reef offers a three-year warranty on the frame and a one-year warranty on the battery, motor and electronic components.

Specifications

The bike frame is constructed of a lightweight aluminum alloy, and can support a maximum weight of about 90 kg, or about 200 lbs. The total weight of the bike is 15 kg, or about 33 lb. The bike comes equipped with 16-inch tires, rear seat suspension and an LED headlight. According to the Reef website, the bike can fold up small enough to fit in a closet or any other tight space.

Power Train

This single-speed bike is powered by a 180 watt high speed electric motor that is powered by a 24 volt, 12 amp lithium battery that gets a maximum distance of 50 km, or about 31 miles. The battery comes with a 240 volt Intelligent Smart Charger. The battery and motor provide enough power for the bike to reach a maximum speed of 35 km/hr, or about 21 mph. Similar 24 volt 12 Ah lithium batteries take approximately two to four hours to charge.

Accessories

As of 2011, Reef offers an accessories kit with the electric folding bike. The kit includes a bicycle bag that is offered as a backpack, front handle bar, single rear or double rear rack bag. Also included are a cable lock, tire pump, tool kit and tire repair kit.
