Smart Shopping for Hiking Boots

When it comes to hiking, selecting the appropriate footwear will probably be your most important decision. Like so much outdoor equipment, hiking boots are available in countless styles, materials, constructions and sizes. From nylon, leather and waterproof synthetics to lightweight day boots and heavy-duty long-term varieties, there is a boot out there for every buyer. But which one is right for you?

What to Look for

The first thing to take into account when shopping for hiking boots is the excursions for which you plan to use them. You can divide hiking into three essential categories: lightweight hiking, mid-weight hiking or backpacking, and extended hiking or mountaineering. For the former, boots are designed for comfort and lack durability and support. Boots for extended trips focus on durable and supportive construction, but often fall short in the lightweight and comfort departments. Mid-weight boots tend to compromise between the other two.

Common Pitfalls

The biggest mistake people make when purchasing hiking boots is not considering the extent of their proposed activity as listed above. The second biggest mistake is selecting an inappropriate material. The material from which a boot is made can greatly affect its weight and performance, but also its protection and support. Nylon boots are lighter weight and more breathable, making them ideal for shorter, warmer trips. They also tend to be less expensive. Leather boots are more protective (water resistant and warm) and last much longer, but they are also designed for extended trips, heavy loads, and weigh a great deal more than their nylon brethren. Also, it is a huge mistake not to think about the weather conditions of your proposed trip. If your hiking environment is cold or wet, you'll want to consider weatherproofing characteristics. Treated leather is waterproof, but leaks can occur. For wet conditions, you'll need a watertight construction, which utilizes special stitching and seaming to deter leaks. Lastly, your hiking boots will only perform well if you take care of them. Read the manufacturer's care instructions and follow them.
