There has been much written about the Mediterranean diet and how it is healthy and can help you lose weight. The "Flat Belly Diet " follows these same ideas. The diet focuses on foods that can help you lose belly fat. This diet also helps lowering your stroke and heart attack risk. according to the American Heart Association. These foods are in the category of MUFAs--monounsaturated fatty acids-- and specifically help you lose belly fat.

Salad

It's not the lettuce and tomato that make you eliminate belly fat, but what you put on top. Use oils high in MUFA for the dressing, like olive, sunflower or flaxseed.

Peanuts

Have some roasted peanuts for high protein and good monounsaturated fat. Peanut butter is also a good choice to help you lose belly fat.

Stir Fry

Stir fry chicken, beef, fish, or just stick to the vegetables. What really matters is that you use one of the MUFA oils. Try walnut or soybean.

Olives

Black and green olives are high in MUFAs, and may help eliminate belly fat. Eat them whole or add them to your favorite recipes for a distinctive taste.

Chocolate

Chocolate, especially if it is dark or semisweet, can help get rid of some of that stomach fat. Keep it to a 1/4-cup a serving so the calories don't add up.

Almonds

Snack on some almonds for a low carbohydrate option that also helps get rid of belly fat. Almond butter is also something to try as a change from peanut butter.

Sesame

Snack on sesame seeds or sprinkle them on chicken or a salad. Sesame seed oil is also a good choice to help lose belly fat.
