The Stott Pilates program was created by Moira and Lindsay G. Merrithew as a means to refine the methods pioneered by Joseph Pilates. Stott Pilates uses a combination of traditional Pilates methods and physical therapy exercises to strengthen the spine and core muscles, among others. This method is considered safe for almost all types of exercisers, including seniors and pregnant women.
Basic Foundations
The Stott Pilates method is build around five basic principles. These include breathing, pelvic placement, rib cage placement, scapular movement and head and cervical spine placement. Each exercise is designed to maximize perfect placement of each of these factors. When these exercises are properly performed, these areas are stretched and strengthened. Stott Pilates also emphasizes flow from one exercise to the next, which further helps to strengthen posture and core muscles.
Differences from Standard Pilates Techniques
Stott Pilates exercises often place more emphasis on proper spinal alignment than standard Pilates exercises. One example is that some Pilates exercises emphasize performing them with a flat back, while the Stott Pilates exercises may focus more on the natural curve of the spine or positioning so that the spine is stable.
Learning Stott Pilates
You can learn Stott Pilates methods in several ways. These include Stott Pilates centers across the country which provide classes and one-on-one sessions instructing you on how to perform the basic exercises. Secondly, Stott Pilates has created exercise videos and exercise equipment to bring the Stott Pilates method into your home, which you can order through its website (see Resources).
Physical Considerations/Limitations
The exercises you can perform with Stott Pilates often depend upon your initial fitness level. If you're in good physical condition and exercise regularly, you may be able to begin at an intermediate or advanced level of Stott Pilates. For beginning exercisers, Stott Pilates may be able to act as a gateway to further exercise opportunities. You should combine Stott Pilates with cardiovascular exercise to experience the greatest physical health benefits.
Benefits
The benefits of Stott Pilates closely mirror those of traditional Pilates, including reduced stress and improved balance, thanks to strengthened core and back muscles. This added strength helps to prevent injury, particularly when engaging in other exercises, such as cardio exercise or weightlifting. As Stott Pilates is easy on the joints, it provides a way for you to stretch and strengthen your muscles without placing extreme pressure on the joints.
