If you have a dairy allergy, you must avoid all foods made with dairy ingredients. Symptoms of a dairy allergy include rash, itching, swelling and trouble breathing. These indicators range in severity, depending on your immune system and the amount of dairy ingested. A food allergy, dairy included, can result in death if not treated. Understanding what ingredients to avoid makes it easier to choose foods that are safe for you to eat.
Caramel Color
Caramel color is an ingredient that is sometimes made with milk protein. Not all products made with caramel color are unsafe; contacting the manufacturer for more information will help you determine if you should avoid the food. Foods that are typically made using caramel color include canned baked beans, brown-colored soft drinks, commercially prepared barbecue sauce and many kinds of candy.
Casein
Casein is a milk protein that shows up in a variety of foods. If you have a dairy allergy, ingesting casein is likely to provoke an allergic reaction. Casein is sometimes listed in the ingredient list, but not always -- so don't assume an item is safe if you don't see it. For example, some types of canned tuna contain hydrolized casein. However, versions packed in water are generally safe. Some types of processed meats include casein as a binder. Other foods that contain casein include wine, coconut milk powder, Cool Whip and baby formula.
Whey
Whey is the watery part of milk and can cause an allergic reaction if consumed. Whey is present in several products, such as yogurt and cheese. However, whey also shows up in other foods. Some baked goods are prepared with whey because it improves the color and taste. Some types of processed meats contain whey, as do many brands of baby formula.
Butter
Butter is made from milk and should be eliminated from your diet if you have a dairy allergy. Butter is in many commercially prepared desserts and snacks. Restaurants often pour melted butter over meat dishes to enhance the appeal, so be sure to request that it be left off. Sometimes melted butter is called ghee in restaurants. Some types of margarine are safe to eat in a dairy-free diet, but be sure to read the ingredients carefully to be sure.
Nougat
Nougat is an ingredient used to make candy. It is derived from milk and is unsafe to eat if you are allergic to dairy. Some types of nougat are made without milk, but they are typically homemade versions. Toblerone, Snickers and Milky Way are three candy bars that contain nougat. If nougat is an ingredient, most candies will have it listed on the label.
