Weight loss poses a challenge for most people. Cultivating good habits such as a healthy diet and exercise regimen can seem daunting if you have never paid attention to diet and exercise previously. However, for some people, the task of losing any weight is not only challenging, but seems impossible. Certain conditions, such as hypothyroidism and chronic stress, can lead to resistance and difficulties in losing weight.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism can cause unexplained weight gain and may also make losing weight more difficult. According to the Mayo Clinic, hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland ceases to produce enough hormones. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include fatigue and sluggishness as well as weight gain. Other symptoms include increased sensitivity to cold, brittle hair and nails, hoarse voice, depression, muscle weakness, muscle aches and constipation.

Hypothyroidism and Weight Loss

The combination of a slowed metabolism as well as fatigue makes losing weight nearly impossible. If you suspect that you have hypothyroidism and are having difficulty losing weight, the best way to boost your metabolism is to see a physician and begin thyroid medications. These will help regulate your metabolism and return your thyroid function to normal. Discuss weight loss options with your physician to determine the best solution for your situation.

Chronic Stress

Chronic stress not only leads to weight gain but can lead to weight loss resistance as well. Weight loss resistance results from chronic stress for both physical and psychological reasons. Physically, chronic stress leads to an increase in cortisol, which increases body fat and slows metabolism. Psychologically, increased stress makes it more difficult to stick with healthy habits such as diet and exercise. Stress may lead to over-eating or poor food choices in order to fill emotional voids.

Chronic Stress and Weight Loss

If you suspect stress is contributing to your weight loss resistance, try stress reduction techniques such as yoga and deep breathing exercises to reduce your overall stress level. Any exercise such as walking, running, swimming or cycling can help reduce stress and increase the production of endorphins, or "feel-good" hormones, which may lead to more mindful and healthy food choices. Finally, look for ways to reduce stressors by setting reasonable goals and eliminating unnecessary obligations. Reducing stressors will help increase your drive and motivation, while eliminating weight loss resistance.
