Lipitor is a medication prescribed to individuals with high cholesterol. It works by blocking the production of cholesterol in the body. Specifically, Drugs.com points out that Lipitor reduces the production of fat that can lead to heart disease, hardening of the arteries and other heart conditions that can cause stroke, heart attack and vascular disease. In addition to reducing cholesterol, Lipitor may help reduce the risk of heart disease and its complications as well as minimizing type two diabetes. As with any medication, Lipitor has the potential for side effects.

Most Common Side Effects

Most individuals using Lipitor experience few, if any side effects. The most commonly occurring side effects are considered harmless, according to Drugs.com, and may include mild nausea, abdominal pain, upset stomach, indigestion, constipation, bloating, gas, nasal congestion, skin rash or itching and/or headache. RxList.com points out the most commonly occurring side effects are muscle pain or spasms. Mild pain in the legs, arms, hands or feet are also common. Some individuals may also experience a mild urinary tract infection.
