Sweat, repeated physical movements and certain clothing materials can all lead to skin irritation, making it a common problem following exercise. Clogged pores cause prickly heat rash, whereas friction causes chafing. The irritation need not stop you from exercising, though. Precautionary measures will help you prevent skin irritation. Consult your physician about any rashes or discomfort you experience after exercise, as you may have a condition that requires treatment. Resume exercise after the irritation clears.

Step 1

Stay hydrated by drinking water before, during and after exercise. Salt from perspiration can turn into skin-irritating crystals otherwise.

Step 2

Wear clean, dry clothing that's not too tight or loose when exercising. Dress in 100 percent cotton for light workouts such as walking, and synthetic fabrics such as Lycra for higher-intensity workouts.

Step 3

Apply a lubricant to areas of the body that tend to rub, such as the inner thighs. Body lubricants intended for exercise are available; however, baby powder and petroleum jelly are also suitable.

Step 4

Shower after exercising, and apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer after gently toweling yourself dry.

Tips and Warnings

  • Protect chafed skin with bacitracin or petroleum jelly to promote healing. Unclog pores from prickly heat with medicated acne pads. Adjust your workout routine and experiment with clothing options if chafing persists.
  • Cotton fabrics may cause irritation when they absorb sweat and remain damp on the skin.
