Is the Tony Little Gazelle Effective?

Different models in the Gazelle exercise machine line provide different benefits. While each offers a different set of features, Gazelles come in two categories. Newer models offer no resistance settings, making them useful for fat-burning and aerobic cardio exercises. Models that offer resistance let you focus more on improving your muscles, but were discontinued in 2010. Discontinued models are plentiful online, at garage sales and in used sporting goods stores.

Goals

Whether or not a Gazelle will be effective in helping you meet your health and fitness goals depends on what model you have, your current fitness level and how often you use the machine. Beginners can benefit from any model of Gazelle, since your goal is to work at a moderate intensity while you build cardiovascular and muscle stamina. The Gazelle is also effective for those looking to burn more calories through non-impact aerobic workouts. Models that offer resistance are effective for helping you tone muscle, improve muscular endurance and build some muscle if you are not a bodybuilder.

Fat-Burning Effectiveness

Fat-burning workouts, so named because they burn a higher percentage of calories from fat, occur at a pace comparable to a brisk walk. A Gazelle is an effective beginner workout tool because it has no impact, has no resistance other than your body weight, and is easy to work. Since your goal with fat-burning workouts is to continue exercising without taking breaks, the Gazelle is a good choice for beginners.

Cardio Workout Effectiveness

Cardio workouts, also known as aerobic workouts, require you to get vigorously intense with your movements, working at a pace similar to jogging. A Gazelle helps you reach your target heart rate for aerobic exercise. If you are in very good shape and have strong muscles, the Gazelle may not help you burn as many calories as other exercise machines, such as an elliptical, treadmill or rowing machine, which require more muscular effort. If you have a model that allows you to use a challenging resistance setting, you will burn many more calories.

Muscle Toning Effectiveness

The Gazelle allows you to target specific muscles and muscle groups for toning, based on how you hold your arms, lean and stand on the machine. For example, you can work your calf muscles, on the lower back of your leg, by standing on your toes while you move the levers and pedals. If you take long strides and hold them, you will work your core muscles. Standing sideways on the machine while you move the pedals lets you target your thighs. You work your butt and hips more when you lean backward. Keep your elbows in to work your biceps and chest, or put your elbows out to tone your triceps and back.
