When you eat carbohydrates your body turns them into glucose, which is used for energy. Glucose is a natural substance and if your body is working properly, your glucose levels will stay in an ideal range because the body releases a hormone called insulin. Insulin is used to keep your levels in check. If your glucose levels are too high because your body is not able to make or use insulin, then you will be diagnosed with diabetes.

Glucose Test and Results

A glucose test is a blood test that shows the amount of glucose in your blood. An ideal glucose test would have a reading of up to 100 mg/dL. If the reading is higher, you may have diabetes. Any number above 100 mg/dL is considered abnormal, but to be diagnosed with diabetes your level has to be 126 mg/dL or higher.

Symptoms

Some people have symptoms that include fatigue, thirst, weight loss, blurred vision and frequent urination. Some people do not have any symptoms and the only way to know for sure is to have a blood test. Therefore, talk with your health care provider about your glucose and get it tested regularly. Diabetes has three types with the most common being type 2. The good news is that type 2 is preventable through healthy diet and exercise habits.

Complications

High blood glucose can cause serious problems. If your levels are too high for too long, you can develop heart disease, skin problems, digestive problems, sexual dysfunction, dental problems and bone and joint disorders. High blood glucose can also damage your eyes, kidneys and nerves. If you already take medications and feel shaky, sluggish, nauseated or faint, your medication may be the cause. In this case you should seek emergency care.

Considerations

Diabetes is treated with medications and lifestyle modification through meal planning, proper nutrition and exercise. High blood glucose levels are serious; follow your doctors advice if your levels are too high. To prevent diabetes, eat mostly plant foods, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy body weight and avoid refined carbohydrates, sugary drinks and processed foods.
