Influenza, also known as seasonal flu, is an extremely infectious condition caused by one of many different types of flu virus. The virus that causes influenza targets your lungs and upper airways, causing symptoms such as aches and pains and a spike in your body temperature. Herbal medicines have been used for many years to help treat influenza. Meet with your doctor before using herbs for this condition to weigh the risks and benefits.

Influenza Information

Influenza symptoms often begin much like symptoms associated with the common cold, including aches throughout your body, fatigue, cough, and fluctuations between hot and cold sweats. In many cases of influenza, a fever will develop after your initial symptoms. You may also experience a dry throat and nausea and vomiting. Flu may last for two weeks or longer, and it is often followed by several more days of fatigue and coughing. Influenza is rarely life-threatening in healthy adults under the age of 60.

Useful Herbs

In his book "Therapeutic Herb Manual," herbalist Ed Smith states that there are many herbal remedies that have antiviral action and help enhance your immune system. Useful herbs in treating influenza include herbs that clear your nasal passages, such as echinacea, goldenseal, yarrow and pau d'arco. Boneset is a commonly used herb for this condition, as it has expectorant action and moves mucus out of your lungs. Osha, an antiviral herb, supports your immune system, while prickly ash bark possesses antimicrobial properties and helps modulate your immune system.

Featured Herb

Astragalus is an herbal medicine that is frequently prescribed to help combat influenza. According to nutrition researcher Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," astragalus helps protect your immune system, encourages wound healing and provides you with sufficient energy to ward off fatigue and chronic stress. Balch notes that astragalus is particularly effective in treating flu, colds and problems associated with your immune system, including AIDS. The roots of this plant are used in herbal medicines and supplements.

Considerations

Influenza can lead to serious health problems in the very young, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. If you develop influenza symptoms, visit your doctor as soon as possible to get properly diagnosed and treated. Your family doctor can provide you with helpful treatment options and information about the safety and proper use of herbal medicines. Consider visiting a licensed naturopathic physician for the most relevant information about herbs and their health actions.
