Clinical depression should always be addressed with your doctor and might require medication. Mild depression, however, can be treated with lifestyle changes, including dietary changes. Even if you're taking medication, certain changes can help you get better sooner and more easily. Keep active and find a support system in family and friends to improve your chances of getting better.

Step 1

Eat more foods rich in B vitamins. According to "Psychology Today," B vitamins can help with mood problems, mental issues and depression. B12 and folic acid are especially important. Foods rich in B vitamins include brown rice, wheat germ, fish, eggs, green vegetables such as broccoli and fruits.

Step 2

Eat more fatty fish. According to a 2004 study published on the "Lipids in Health and Disease" journal, omega-3 fatty acids might help fight depression and stabilize mood, especially when consumed on a regular basis. Fatty fish such as tuna and salmon are rich in omega-3's. Vegetarians can eat flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds as an alternative source.

Step 3

Cut down on sugars. Sugary foods such as desserts, white flour and processed grains such as white rice can all cause a quick spike in your blood sugar, followed soon afterward by a crash. These ups and downs can affect your mood and make you feel anxious, irritated or upset. Focus on whole grains as well as cereals and treats with no sugar added to maintain a better balance in your blood sugar.
