Tae Bo is a fitness program designed by martial arts expert Billy Blanks. It incorporates moves from Tae Kwon Do and dance and is designed to burn calories, build muscle and improve body awareness and movement. Since it's introduction in the 1980s, Blanks has expanded on Tae Bo to include resistance bands and weighted gloves, which are designed to increase calorie burn and muscle strength.
Burns Fat
At its core, Tae Bo is a cardiovascular workout similar to kickboxing. According to Harvard Health Publications, martial arts such as kickboxing burn between 300 and 444 calories per 30-minute workout, which, combined with a healthy diet, can lead to weight loss. Cardiovascular exercise has other benefits besides burning calories including improving heart and lung function. Losing weight and improving heart and lung health reduces your risk for heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.
Builds Muscle
Cardiovascular workouts burn calories during the workout, but muscle-building exercises increase the calories your body uses during everyday activities. Tae Bo moves not only increase your heart rate, but also build muscle in the legs, core and upper body. The round-house kick in Tao Bo is done with the upper body slightly off center, which requires the core muscles to engage to maintain balance. The punches, particularly with resistance bands or weighted gloves, work the core, as well as the upper back, shoulders and arms.
Fun
Success in losing weight involves regular workouts, which are more likely if you enjoy the exercise program. Tae Bo, with it's combination of martial arts and dance, can be enjoyable for many people. The kicks and punching aspects can make some feel empowered. As a result, working out with Tae Bo may feel less tedious and make you more likely to stick with the program and lose weight.
Improves Body Awareness and Self-Esteem
Tae Bo is a fast-paced total body workout that improves balance and body control. Billy Blanks emphasizes how the control of the body increases one's sense of power and confidence. Studies show that exercise can improve mood and self-esteem, while also decreasing feelings of anxiety and depression. The positive results in weight loss and mood reinforce the program, which means you are more like to continue to work out to Tae Bo and lose weight.
