Football players are constantly trying to improve at their sport. One of the primary ways this is done is by getting faster, quicker and more agile. Football players can do exercises and drills to improve speed and quickness. Some strength-training exercises can also help football players move with greater quickness.
Cone Drill
Football players must develop speed and lateral quickness. This can be done with the cone drill. Set up three sets of cones 5 yards apart at the15-yard line. Start off at the goalline and sprint to the first set of cones. Sidestep to the second set of cones and step behind them. Turn 90 degrees to your left and sprint to the third set of cones. Circle around them and sprint back to the goalline. Take a one-minute break and then repeat the drill.
Parachute Training
Build speed by training with a running parachute. Go to the football field and start off at the goalline. Sprint to the opposite goalline and as the chute opens up, you will feel a significant resistance. Do not turn around to look at it or stop. Keep running as fast as you can. Then turn around and roll the chute back in the harness so you can use it again. Sprint back the opposite way. As you reach the 50-yard line, press the release button on the harness so the chute drops off. That will create a surge of speed that will help you run faster.
Tire Drill
Football coaches have used the tire drill to help players get quicker for generations. Set up two rows of tires that go 12 deep. Line up in front of the first two tires and sprint through them, making sure to pick your feet up high so you don't trip over the edge of any of the tires. When you get to the end, reverse direction and run back in the opposite direction.
Hill Running
Hill running is an outstanding drill to develop explosive speed and agility. Run uphill to build strength and explosive power in your core muscles, glutes, hamstrings and calf muscles. Run downhill to improve your balance and technique. Running downhill will give you more agility to escape tacklers when you are on the move.
