When sand and sunshine mix, it can create the perfect atmosphere for summer fun. Swimming at the beach is something that can be enjoyed by anyone at any age. Before you go diving into the waves to make a splash there's a few things to keep in mind. It only takes one mishap for a day at the beach to turn tragic. Keeping safety a priority can help to make your trip to the beach an enjoyable one.

Step 1

Learn to swim before you go if you don't know how already. Even if you don't plan on doing anything more than wading in waste high water, it's best to be prepared for the unexpected. Consider checking at your local pool or YMCA to schedule swimming lessons. Flotation devices can be helpful but it's the ability to swim that can actually save your life if it comes to it.

Step 2

Talk to the lifeguards about swimming conditions before you jump in the water. Always have a buddy with you so that if something should happen. Follow any lifeguard instructions, and read and obey any posted signs giving rules or warnings. Stay in sight of the lifeguard while swimming at all times. If you plan on swimming any distance, swim parallel to the shore rather than away from it.

Step 3

Avoid diving in waters you aren't familiar with as this could lead to potential injuries, especially if the water isn't as deep you expected it to be. Stray logs and rocks can be hidden in the water where you can't clearly see them.

Step 4

Apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher find 15 to 30 minutes before heading out to the beach. Even sunscreen that boasts being water proof can lose of its effectiveness in the water. Sunscreen should be re-applied every two hours.

Step 5

Swim sideways rather than against the current if you happen to get caught in a rip current. These powerful channeled currents can occur anywhere without warning and can drag a person under and away from the shore.

Things You'll Need
