There are numerous benefits to creating your own gym at home. Not only does it save you money in the long run because you don't have to pay a monthly gym fee, but it also allows you to work out whenever you have time. While you may be eager to dive right in to buying equipment, take the time to choose the pieces that suit your needs to ensure you don't end up with a bunch of clunky equipment collecting dust.
Set a Budget
While you may want that expensive piece of equipment, your budget may not have room. Deciding how much you can spend is the first step to building a home gym. Since most home gyms consist of a few different pieces of equipment, figuring out how much you can spend for the entire project will show you how much cash you have to spend on each piece of equipment -- as well as any extras, such as a television or radio to use while you work out.
Experiment With Different Equipment
If you're not sure what types of equipment with which you want to furnish your gym, purchase a one-day pass to your local gym to sample the goods -- from cardio equipment such as treadmills, elliptical trainers or bikes, to free weights and weight machines. In addition to finding your favorite equipment, you'll get a feel for your limitations. If you can only curl 25 lbs., for example, there's no need to buy 40 dumbbells right away. Save that purchase for down the road when you've worked your way up to it.
Size Things Up
You don't want to set your budget and find the perfect equipment only to take it home and realize that you don't have enough room to fit it all. This can be avoided by measuring the space you have before buying your equipment. If you have a small space, consider smaller items, such as a jump rope for cardio or a yoga ball for strength training. Whatever equipment you decide on, be sure to give yourself enough space to move freely.
Floor Plans
Finally, it's time to set up your gym. Before you put in all your heavy equipment, lay down some padding, such as carpet or exercise mats, especially if you're going to be lying on the floor. Draw up a rough floor plan to avoid having to move things around regularly just to get in a workout. Include items such as televisions, fans and any other extras you may want to include.
